Dig Jelly - Rayko & Joey

Editor's Note: Here are a few funny/interesting snippets that didn't quite make the final cut that went into purple SKY's Winter edition interview with Dig Jelly. This is meant as a companion to the published article, and I doubt it'll mean much outside that context. Dig Jelly fans enjoy!

ANIME FANS

Rayko (R): Have you played the game One Piece vs. Naruto?

pS:Is this a real game or did you make it up?

R: No, no it's real. It came out in Japan. We have the Japanese version but the American version is coming out soon. It's really cool. (shows me her Naruto keychain) Keychain! (sings)

pS:Is that dressed up by the way, Joey? Is this your anime attempt here? (points to his Atom Boy T-Shirt)

Joey (J): Basically, yeah. I'm pretty low key and it was a last minute thing. Not last minute but finding something I was like, 'Oh man'. Usually I'll, most likely I'll end up shirtless anyway. When I'm playing on drums, you know what I mean.

pS:Oh... I thought you meant some other...

Rayko laughs.
J: Noooo! Yeah, I'll walk around the lobby like that. (laughs)

BOILING WATER

pS:Do you know how to boil water?

R: I learned that like a few days ago. I called J for directions.
J: I believe it's 7 to 10 minutes...

pS:I'm gonna take your word on that. (To the PMX staff) Get me directions about boiling water now!

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

pS:Was it love at first sight?

J: For her?

pS:No, for you guys! Did you see her perform or something? How did that happen?

R: No, we met through a producer.
J: Well I met her through a producer, and the other guys just wanted a band with good hooks, and she had something to sell so...

MORE ABOUT THE TOUR

J: When you're the first band on the bill you get kicked around.
R: We were like the baby band. Veruca Salt are like, you know, the big people.

pS:Was Veruca Salt mean to you? They seem like such decent girls.

J: They were cool. They were cool.
R: They were great.

pS:They didn't dip your pigtails in any inkwells?

R: No.
J: They must have mellowed out.
R: They took us into their tour bus. Their great big tour bus and they really took care of us. We went through the hurricane in Florida.
J: Yeah we just missed it.

pS:Which one was it?

J: What was it called?

Ernesto? Café Au Lait?

J: Something like that.

LANGUAGE

pS:In Harder Beat Magazine in 2005 you said you "learned English because no would listen otherwise" Now that you've been doing the PMX here, would you change your mind on that or do you think the language barrier is still a factor?

R: The language barrier is a factor only if you want to make it in the world. My dream is huge. I want to travel the world. I don't want to just stop, I don't want to limit myself. I'm totally bilingual in English and Japanese. So when I'm in Japan I can you know, JapRap with all my people. And you know, here, I can just talk to you guys.
J: How's your French?
R: Whatever. I can say one or two words.
J: How horrible would it be if you had to like, talk through an interpreter and then you have to like talk to her through...

pS:I normally do it in Japanese, because I speak a little... but, this is so much easier.

R: Yoroshiku Onegai Shimasu.

pS:Yoroshiku Onegai Shimasu.

R: Doumo.

pS:Your personality's gonna change though, look at you, so polite!

J: Yeah she's all sorts of polite. R: I know. I love that about Japan. Japanese people, the politeness. And Asian people. I got so many different Asian friends. Here the beauty of it is you get to meet all kinds of different people.

THE MISSING MEMBERS

pS:It's a shame your guitarist couldn't be here, I heard he was really good. He has a solo album out and all this other stuff.

R: He just played in the Catalina Islands last night. And he calls me and he's like, 'I'm so hungover," such a Rock 'n' Roll guy. Our chemistry is really great...
J: (pointing to the empty seats on either side of them) Yeah, can't you tell?

(laughs)

J: They're always there for you, those guys...

pS:Talk for the other members.

R: I could put him on the speakerphone.

pS:Who is physically weaker among them?

J: I don't know.
R: We play ball like basketball.
J: The guitar player is more athletic. The other guy works out.

pS:The other guy?!

J: Yeah the other guy.
R: I'm the best at skateboarding. He's the good at like physical stuff, he's been lifting like what 250 legpress?
J: Yeah he's trying to get his legs stronger. The other guy is stronger in the head I think.

pS:We'll get a cage match going and let you know.

R: If you compare ego (guitarist) wins.
